A Global Warming Bedtime Story

A dear friend sent me this video.  His company recently relocated to the frigid North and he is longing to be back in Los Angeles.

  1. Mauricio Alonso says:

There are the die-hard AGW fanatics, and then there are the die-hard AGW-is-a-scam fanatics. Then there are those who, like me, stand halfway in between. Cute video, but just that: cute. Who produced it? Energy companies who stand to lose with cap and trade schemes? Guess the whole GW thing pissed them off mightily. Still, it’s sad to see the extreme view taken for granted. After all the science isn’t settled, one way or the other.

    • Energy companies don’t lose with cap and trade. YOU DO. They just pass the added costs on to you. And don’t forget, energy companies are publicly traded companies–that means everyone with stocks in these companies lose out if their bottom line diminishes–that means your teacher retirement fund dries up.

The science doesn’t have to be settled one way or another. Besides the fact that science doesn’t work that way, the onus of proof is on those making extraordinary claims–not on those of us who don’t drink the koolaid.

  2. Harry Levine says:

This video is so incredibly misleading. The grownups say “CO2 is bad.”

No one says “CO2 is bad,” and leave it at that (at least no sane people). Some people say that releasing CO2 in extreme excess is bad…

Of course CO2 is important. Of course there would be no life on earth without CO2. That doesn’t mean we should dramatically increase the amount of CO2 in our atmosphere without knowing what the results will be.

I simply think that we should avoid (to whatever extent that we can) significantly changing the atmosphere since we won’t be able to reverse said change if we realize that it is in fact bad. I don’t know much about the referenced law, but I don’t see why spreading the idea of conservation and care is such a harmful idea. In fact, I think spreading the idea that GW is a myth is much worse because it encourages people to not care about their environmental impact.

    • The video is not supposed to be a scientific treatise. It is a political ad.
You are wrong about CO2. The global warming fanatics want CO2 labeled a “pollutant” so that it can be regulated. Why would you seek to label something a “pollutant” if you didn’t think it was bad.
Human-induced global warming is a hoax. Pretending that it isn’t will do nothing for the environment. Money should be spent on REAL pollution and control. Making CO2 the bad guy distracts us from the real environmental problems.

    • Sam Kim says:

      Harry Levine, here’s an idea.

Shut off your computer, abandon your nice house in the suburbs, refuse to use any indoor plumbing, and stop using any methods of transportation that require the use of fossil fuels. This includes “zero-emissions” [sic] vehicles such as subway cars and electric trains, which rely upon an electrical grid that is partially sustained by the combustion of hydrocarbons.

No? How convenient is it to soothe your bleeding heart by pretending that you’re doing something positive, when all you’re doing is burdening your nation’s stagnant economy and pissing off taxpaying citizens? By the way, how many of the countries that signed the Kyoto Protocol are anywhere close to making serious reductions in their carbon emissions?

  3. a_engr1948 says:

Sam has a point about pretending. Too many people think that driving a Prius, for example, will actually make a difference. Such actions are just feel-good responses.

  4. E=MC2 says:

I wish this would get broadcast on network TV.
